What it is?
A way of using the body's natural indicators (signs) to work out a woman's fertile and infertile times of the menstrual cycle. Withdrawal is not a natural method of family planning.
How it works?
The indicators (changes in waking temperature, cervical secretions and a calculation based on the length of the menstrual cycles) show when it is safe to have sex without risking pregnancy.
Advantages
No side effects. Can be used to plan pregnancy or avoid pregnancy.
Disadvantages
Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Need to avoid sex or use a barrier method of contraception if have sex during fertile times. Must be properly taught to be effective. Need to keep daily records. Needs high level of commitment from both partners.
How effective is it?
Using several indicators together can be up to 98% effective. This means that 2 in every 100 women who practise natural family planning will get pregnant each year.
What makes it less effective?
Must be properly taught and the instructions must be properly followed or natural family planning will be much less effective.
Can anyone use this method?
Most women can use this method if they have sufficient commitment and can share the responsibility with their partner.
